Given that Konami has made an official announcement that Suikoden and Suikoden 2 are going to have an HD remake to be released in 2023, we have to write a game review for the original game before that!
Suikoden is a classic role-playing game (RPG) developed by Konami that was originally released for the PlayStation in 1995. The game has since gained a dedicated following due to its engaging story, memorable characters, and unique gameplay mechanics. In Suikoden, you play as the main character, who is drawn into a conflict between rival factions vying for control over a powerful magical artefact known as the True Rune.
Gameplay
One of the standout features of Suikoden is its unique combat system. The game uses a “tactical” turn-based system in which you control a party of six characters in battle. Each character has its own unique abilities and stats, and the player must strategize and choose the best combination of characters to bring into battle. In addition to the standard combat system, Suikoden also introduces “duels,” which are one-on-one battles between two characters that allow for more personal and dramatic showdowns.
Another key aspect of Suikoden is its “recruitment” system, in which the player can recruit over 100 different characters to join their cause. Each character has its own unique story and personality and can be used in battle or assigned to various roles within the player’s castle. The recruitment system adds a sense of depth and replay value to the game, as players can choose different characters and build their party in different ways.
Story
Suikoden has a complex and engaging story that takes place across multiple continents and follows a large cast of interesting and well-developed characters. The main story follows the conflict between the rival factions vying for control of the True Rune, but there are also numerous subplots and character arcs that explore themes of loyalty, friendship, and betrayal. The story is told through a mix of text-based dialogues and animated cutscenes and is well-written and captivating from start to finish.
Visuals and Sound
Suikoden is a visually impressive game for its time, with detailed character designs and beautifully rendered environments. The character sprites are small but well-animated, and the game’s art style is pleasing to the eye. The game’s soundtrack is also noteworthy, featuring a mix of emotional and epic tracks that perfectly complement the game’s tone and themes.
Verdict
Suikoden is a classic RPG that is well worth playing for fans of the genre or anyone looking for a unique and engaging gaming experience. Its fascinating story, memorable characters, and unique gameplay mechanics make it a standout title that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
